As much as we love playing video games, many of us have jobs to work or other things to do outside of gaming hours. Not so for one man from South Korea, who managed to make his hobby into an incredibly successful career. If you like gaming and want to follow in his footsteps, here’s his story about how playing video games led to a successful career.
Sure, sitting in front of a computer for long periods is not exactly good for your body or mind. But, as we know, having a successful career means sacrificing parts of yourself for something greater. In that case, playing video games can be seen as an investment—in yourself and your future.
If you already play video games, why not try your hand at making some money? You may be able to channel your inner gamer into a career in gaming. There are some things you’ll need to do on your own, like learning coding languages and developing expertise in certain platforms, but if you have an entrepreneurial mind-set and a passion for video games, there is no reason why you can’t make it big.
Networking is one of those things a lot of people say they’re going to do but then rarely follow through with. It can be tough, especially if you don’t know where to start or who to talk to. In my case, I met someone during college who had a career as a game designer for large game publishers. For example, we would have some of his colleagues over at our place for dinner and we would meet them face-to-face after playing games with them online.
The best way to jump start your career as a gamer is to learn as much about different games as you can. Try to play a variety of different games, from classics like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong, to more recent releases like Angry Birds and Call of Duty.
Regardless of what you’re writing about, one of your biggest goals should be to make connections with other writers in your niche. These connections can ultimately lead to guest-writing opportunities and more exposure on their sites. When you create great content that your peers enjoy, they’ll want to share it with their own audiences, which will drive up readership and help you expand your network.
If you want to succeed on YouTube, it’s worth building your own website as a hub for all of your content. Not only does your site serve as an extra location for new viewers to find and subscribe to you, but it also gives you a place to host videos that are too long for YouTube. You can then link your YouTube channel to your website and showcase everything you’ve uploaded so far.
In high school, my love for playing video games was a secret I didn’t want to share with anyone. My friends thought I was a nerd who preferred sitting in front of a screen to participating in their extracurricular activities—and frankly, they were right. But it wasn’t until years later that I realized just how much my gaming obsession had prepared me for success in college and beyond. Here are some valuable lessons gaming helped me land an awesome job and improved my motivation. Gaming taught me valuable time-management skills: When you have limited time to spend on a game, you learn how to prioritize your tasks and work efficiently toward your goals. This skill translates well into any career setting where you need to work under pressure or tight deadlines.
